The current activities reside in two main research areas; namely bioactive glasses for bone tissue engineering (BTE) and glass-ceramics for sustainable materials. In the field of BTE, scaffolds based on a variety of silicate bioactive glasses are being developed and characterized. Mainly the foam replica technique [1] is used to fabricate highly porous scaffolds and the novel scaffolds are functionalized by incorporating surface coatings to improve their physical and biological properties.
The second research area is within the framework of the European project (funded by Horizon 2020): “Turning waste from steel industry into valuable low cost feedstock for energy intensive industry” (REslag) , and is focused on the development of novel glass-ceramics from waste waste from steel industry for industrial applications.
