Chitosan-bioactive glass based coatings on magnesium alloy WE43 have been successfully obtained by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) [1]. This project will investigate a similar type of coatings on pure magnesium. Thus, electrophoretically deposited chitosan-bioactive glass composite coating on magnesium substrates will be analyzed. The protective effect of the coating against corrosion will be checked by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the bioactive behavior of coated substrates in simulated body fluid will be determined. Overall, the results should demonstrate the importance of pretreatment of the substrate for anticorrosive chitosan-bioactive glass coatings and they will also determine what impact the missing alloying elements entail.
