In this Bachelor thesis research project, a variety of plant extracts are incorporated into mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles [1] which will be further used to coat standard 45S5 bioactive glass-based scaffolds fabricated by the foam replica method [2]. The new scaffolds will be characterized in terms of morphology, in-vitro bioactivity, phytotherapeutic agent release capability and cytocompatibility. The successful completion of the project will provide a new path towards novel functionalized bioactive glass scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.
